This October, Iwona Sobotka will take on the title role of Verdi’s Aida at the Hong Kong Cultural Centre Grand Theatre. The production, staged from 9 to 12 October 2025, marks one of the flagship events celebrating the 30th anniversary of the Hong Kong Arts Development Council.

Directed by the renowned Hugo de Ana, the new staging promises a visually striking and emotionally powerful interpretation of Verdi’s timeless masterpiece. With his signature grand scale, De Ana will recreate the world of ancient Egypt, combining opulent sets, costumes, and lighting with the opera’s sweeping musical drama.

Iwona Sobotka will share the stage with a distinguished cast including Ivan Gyngazov and Marco Berti as Radamès, Olesya Petrova and Nino Surguladze as Amneris, and Marco Caria and Burak Bilgili as Amonasro. The performances will be led by conductor Ramon Tebar, joined by choreographer Michele Cosentino and lighting designer Valerio Alfieri, with full support from the Opera Hong Kong Orchestra and Chorus.

Sobotka’s interpretation of Aida—one of Verdi’s most demanding soprano roles—will highlight her radiant tone, dramatic intensity, and lyrical expressivity. The role embodies the ultimate conflict between love, loyalty, and destiny, culminating in one of opera’s most moving final duets.
