Iwona Sobotka makes a triumphant role debut as the Marschallin in Richard Strauss’s Der Rosenkavalier, earning rave reviews for her portrayal at the Baltic Opera. Please read the reviews below:
The Marschallin of Iwona Sobotka – simply shattering. I do not know what impressed more: the beauty and absolute perfection of the singing – I am entirely certain that at the Wiener Staatsoper, at the Met, or anywhere else, this portrayal would bring audiences to their knees – or the extraordinarily subtle, convincing, and expressively deep acting interpretation. Simply a great role. A whole kaleidoscope of emotional nuance: a deeply moving monologue at the close of Act I, and then the combination of dignity, warmth, sadness – and the sense that she truly was a grande dame in the final scene. – Mikołaj Zgliński
Iwona Sobotka can stand alongside the greatest interpreters of the Marschallin – a role demanding a powerful voice and enormous expressive resources. All of this the singer was able to convey, filling the character with her own interpretation. The voice rang out naturally and freely, yet with extraordinary expressiveness. It was a great, indeed a brilliant creation. I thought to myself – I was attending the fourth performance – that this is precisely how the history of Polish opera is made. It was without doubt one of the finest vocal achievements of recent years. The Polish artists were, across the board, outstanding. – Tomasz Pasternak, Orfeo
